Interior doors are one of the highest-contact surfaces in a house and one of the least considered. You touch them every day, they define how much privacy each room actually offers, and there are usually a dozen or more of them — which means replacing them is one of the few interior changes that affects every room at once.
They are also where a remodel budget often gets quietly trimmed, because two doors can look identical hanging in an opening and behave nothing alike. The difference between a hollow-core and a solid-core door is invisible from six feet away and unmistakable the moment you push it. Doors are the clearest example in a house of quality you feel rather than see.

Construction is the decision that matters most, and it is invisible from across the room. Four families cover almost everything used in a home.
A thin face skin over a lightweight internal grid, most commonly cardboard honeycomb. Light, inexpensive, and the default in most production housing. It swings easily, which is genuinely convenient, but it blocks very little sound, sounds hollow when knocked, dents rather than dings, and is difficult to repair once damaged. It is a reasonable choice for closets and low-priority openings and a poor one for bedrooms, bathrooms, and offices.
A face skin over a solid engineered core, typically particleboard or a similar composite. Substantially heavier, notably better at blocking airborne sound, and it feels expensive to operate — the mass and the way it swings both register immediately. Solid-core is the practical upgrade for most homes: it delivers most of the perceptual benefit of solid wood at a fraction of the cost and with far better dimensional stability.
A door built from actual lumber, usually stile-and-rail construction. It is the right answer where the wood itself is the point — historic homes, stain-grade interiors, and anywhere the door is a feature. It moves with seasonal humidity more than an engineered core does, which means it needs a bit more attention to fit and finish, and Northern California's dry-summer, wet-winter swing is real enough to matter.
Doors with glazed panels borrow light between rooms and are excellent where an interior room would otherwise be dark, at the obvious cost of privacy — which is why obscured and reeded glass exist. Louvred doors ventilate, which matters for laundry closets and mechanical spaces. Both are specialty solutions to specific problems rather than general-purpose choices.
Weight is the practical consequence of upgrading door construction, and it is worth planning for. A solid-core or solid-wood door puts real load on its hinges and the jamb behind them, and it needs hinges rated for the weight, adequate fastening into framing rather than only into the jamb, and hardware that will not loosen over years of use.
This is a common failure in partial upgrades: heavier slabs hung on existing light-duty hardware, which sag within a year or two and then bind against the jamb. If you are upgrading construction, the hinges and the jamb attachment are part of the upgrade, not an optional extra.
For sound, mass is the main lever, and it is why solid-core doors block noticeably more than hollow-core ones. But the door is only part of the assembly. Sound moves through gaps far more readily than through material, and a typical interior door has a substantial gap under it plus clearance around the perimeter. A better door with the same gaps improves things less than people expect — sealing the perimeter and addressing the undercut is what converts a heavier door into an actually quieter room.
The complementary point is that a door in a wall that transmits sound freely will not solve the problem on its own. Doors and wall assemblies work together, and the wall usually deserves attention first. Fire is a narrower but firmer consideration. In specific locations — most commonly the door between an attached garage and living space — the California Building Standards Code imposes requirements on the door assembly, which can include fire resistance and self-closing operation. This is not a place for a style preference to override the requirement, and your building department is the authority on what applies to your home. Doors in that location are typically part of a permitted scope rather than a casual swap.

A pre-hung door arrives as a complete unit — slab, jamb, and hinges already fitted. A slab is the door alone, hung on the jamb that is already there. The condition of that existing jamb decides which one is right.
Pre-hung makes sense when
- The opening is being newly framed, or the existing jamb is damaged, out of square, or the wrong width.
- Wall thickness changed — after added insulation or a soundproofing assembly — so jamb width no longer matches.
- You want consistent reveal and operation across many openings at once.
- You are moving from hollow-core to solid-core and want hinges and jamb matched to the new weight.
Slab replacement makes sense when
- The existing jamb is sound, square, and the right width.
- You are matching an original historic jamb and casing worth preserving.
- The change is cosmetic and you want to avoid disturbing existing trim.
- Only a few doors are being replaced and the existing hardware locations work.
The practical difference is trim. Pre-hung units generally mean removing and replacing casing, so the door decision becomes a trim decision at the same time — see trim and millwork. Slab replacement leaves existing casing undisturbed, which is exactly why it is the preferred route in a home with original trim worth keeping.
Both solve the same problem — a swinging door needs floor space to swing into — and both come with trade-offs that are rarely mentioned alongside the photographs.
Pocket doors need a wall to disappear into
The door slides into a cavity inside the wall, which means that section of wall becomes a frame around a void. It cannot carry structural load, and it cannot hold plumbing or much electrical — anything already routed through that stretch has to be relocated. In a retrofit this is the constraint that decides feasibility, and it is why pocket doors are far easier to add during a wall-opening project than as a standalone change.
Pocket doors seal poorly and are harder to service
A pocket door sits in a track with clearance on all sides, so it blocks less sound than a swinging door and does not seal an opening the same way. Modern hardware is considerably better than the hardware of decades past, but when something does go wrong inside the pocket, access usually means opening the wall. Worth knowing before choosing one for a primary bathroom.
Barn doors manage sightlines, not sound
A barn door hangs on a track outside the wall and covers the opening rather than sealing it. There is a gap on every side by design. That makes it a good solution where the goal is visual separation and a poor one for a bedroom or bathroom where sound and privacy matter. It also requires clear wall alongside the opening for the door to park on, which rules out more locations than people expect.
Both change the wall around them
Barn door hardware is heavy and has to be anchored into blocking or framing rather than drywall, which means the wall usually needs backing installed. Pocket doors require the wall to be opened and reframed. Neither is a hardware-store afternoon in an existing wall, and both are dramatically cheaper to do while the walls are already open for other work.

Panel configuration is the fastest signal of era in a door. Two-panel, four-panel, five-panel, and flush slabs each carry period associations, and the right choice is usually the one the house already speaks. Craftsman homes across Sacramento and the foothills often use simple square-edged panel doors; Victorian and early-century homes run to taller, more articulated panelling; post-war ranch homes tend toward flush or simple panel doors; and mid-century homes on the Peninsula often use flush slabs deliberately.
Matching an original profile is usually possible. Where stock doors do not match, doors can be built to reproduce the panel layout, stile and rail proportions, and edge detail of the originals. As with trim, the profile is only part of it — the reveal in the jamb, the hardware style, and the finish all contribute to whether a new door reads as original or as a replacement.
One consistency note: doors and casing are read together, so they should be decided together. A new door style hung inside original casing, or new casing around original doors, produces a mismatch that is hard to name and easy to see. Are solid-core doors worth the extra cost?
For most homes, yes, and doors are one of the few upgrades where the difference registers every single day. Should I buy pre-hung doors or just the slabs?
