Northern California weather is the real judge of siding. We get long, hot summers with intense UV, wide day-to-night temperature swings, wet winters, and — across much of the foothills — genuine wildfire exposure. That combination rewards a durable material and a correct install and punishes a weak product or sloppy work. Fire performance is the factor that pushes many homeowners in wildfire-prone areas toward non-combustible fiber cement, which meets CBC Chapter 7A ignition-resistant requirements in the wildland-urban interface.
No siding makes a home fireproof, and no cladding alone will stop a wildfire. The goal is to reduce ignition risk and meet code: a non-combustible or ignition-resistant exterior, paired with ember-resistant vents, defensible space, and the rest of a home-hardening approach. Fiber cement contributes to that system; it is not a guarantee on its own.
The material is also only half the moisture story. Whatever siding you choose, what keeps water out of the wall is the weather-resistive barrier and flashing behind it, installed correctly. A premium board over poor flashing still fails, and quality vinyl over a properly detailed wall performs well.
